Since Ning made this proposal Google have stepped forward and asked to be involved with the initial project. They have donated their implementation Open Social, which according to the Ning proposers is even better than their own.

Additionally, staff from Hi5 and MySpace have signed up to the proposed Apache Incubator project. Things are looking healthy from a diversity perspective and the project has only just entered the acceptance vote stage.
