The Wookie project is currently one of the Apache Incubator projects, but it has originated from a research project at the University of Bolton. Recently, OSS Watch organized a workshop on how to engage developers with open source projects. Scott Wilson gave a presentation there about how Wookie has evolved into an Apache Incubator project and how this fits in their strategy towards becoming a sustainable software project. Sustainability in open source projects is an important topic for OSS Watch and engaging developers in your project is an important part of that. At that same workshop Mark Johnson showed in a very entertaining presentation that it can be very rewarding and fun for a developer to get involved in the development of an open source project. He presented his personal story about how he contributed code back to the Moodle project which helped both his project and Moodle.
There was a meetup on Wookie recently that is covered in detail here. At this meetup Ross Gardler explained the incubating process at Apache and reasons why Apache is a logical place for the Wookie project. Furthermore, Scott Wilson explained the Wookie project in more detail. You can find the sheets of his presentation here. Lastly, Wilbert Kraan held a session on the combination of Google Wave and Wookie.
